Your air conditioning unit has three main components, the condenser, the evaporator and the compressor. Your condenser and compressor are most likely located on the outside portion of your air conditioner. Your evaporator is located inside your home and is sometimes part of your furnace.
Fluid arrives at your compressor as a cold, low-pressure gas and as it is squeezed by the compressor, the molecules are packed closer together. When these molecules are compressed, their energy becomes much higher as does their temperature. So when this fluid leaves your compressor, is is a hot gas that then flows into the condenser. The condenser dissipates the heat, so when the fluid leaves it is much cooler. The liquid then moves to the evaporator through a very narrow tube. The pressure on the liquid drops, it then becomes a cool gas that is expelled into the air, cooling your home. The process then starts all over again and continues until your home reaches a comfortable temperature.
