As furnace professionals, we encounter any number of problems that occur with furnaces, and many of them can actually be traced back to a dirty furnace filter. Sure, you know you need to change out your furnace filter more than once a year, yet you still put it off over and over, until your furnace stops working. And even if your furnace still works despite a filthy filter, you are probably paying way too much in energy costs due to inefficiency.

Believe it or not, many furnace problems can be traced to your thermostat. Many of these furnace problems are due to improper settings. So check your thermostat before you do anything rash.

If you have an older heating system, you could have a pilot light that is not lit. If it is something more than just a pilot light, then have a professional look at it.
